She met Dr. Jan way back in the 1690s when both of them were attending Mayville High School, and they develop intense interest on one another. They exchanged letters for some time.

Jan invited Diane to visit him in the Netherlands and meet his family and the couple become seriously in love. After years of dating, in 1967 the couple finally tied the knot. The wedding was attended by family members and relatives.
