Heimo and his family came to light when James Cambell released a book ” The Final Frontiersman” which was basically about Heimo and his family and how they lived alone in Alaska Arctic Wilderness.

They rely on hunting and fishing to earn their meal and livelihood. The main source of their income are the documentaries and features that are filmed in the wilderness featuring them and their livelihood. Despite losing his first daughter in the wilderness as a result of canoeing, Heimo never gave up his life in the wilderness instead he even became more motivated to keep living in the wilderness.

Heimo met his wife Edna in Yupik a whaling village in St Lawrence Island. The two fell in love and got married. Heimo took in both his wife Edna and her daughter Millie. Later on 29th May 1982, the couple had their first daughter together Coleen Korth.

Coleen and Millie had other two younger sisters, Rhonda and Krin. The family enjoyed living in the wilderness braving the life challenges together as a family. Coleen life was however cut short in a canoeing river accident which took away her life.

The saddest part about Coleen’s death is that her body was never located even after a long search. The death of Coleen was a significant blow to Heimo and his family. After the death of Coleen Heimo and his wife relocated their other three daughters outside the wilderness. The daughters only visit their parents once in a while and stay for some time before going back.

On 13th June 1984, Coleen Korth lost her life in a tragic river accident; Coleen was just two years when her life was cut short.  Heimo and his wife were devastated by the incident, their family and friends tried to talk them out of their lifestyle in the wilderness, but he refused to leave his lifestyle behind.

He later filed a petition to have a designated peak named after her daughter Coleen. The court, however, denied his petition as Coleen wasn’t a historical figure hence couldn’t be assigned a designated peak.
